Screaming Skulls
There are numerous legends about skulls, which, if removed from the homes where they once lived, would wail, shriek, knock over chairs with poltergeist energy, and somehow spoil the crops in people's gardens. If these "haunted" skulls are allowed to remain in the house, they keep quiet and the crops flourish. Apparently, in the old days, more than a few people had the foresight to get their hands on a skull while the getting was... (posted by Bill Ectric 2 years 131 days ago.)

The Easter Island Horror
The bizarre and disturbing details of this report made me doubt my own sanity. It was all I could do not to drum up a cryptic Latin or French phrase, the way Poe used to do, to show you, my dear readers, the extent to which reason will wrestle with terror. The long-held theory is that rampant consumption of natural resources turned Easter Island into deserted terrain of ghosts. Logs were needed to roll the gia (posted by Bill Ectric 5 years 155 days ago.)

Surreal Music: Dave Roberts & the Crawfish of Love
No one knew what to think when we first saw a band called " Crawfish of Love ." The stage was strewn with surreal artwork, a manikin head, some TV sets all turned on to different channels, guitar amplifiers, drums, and five musicians that looked like they were conspiring mischief among themselves. The band was formed by Dave Roberts, who handles lead vocals and guitar. Just about every member sings... (posted by Bill Ectric 5 years 232 days ago.)

Book Review: Arthur & George by Julian Barnes
Julian Barnes does a magic trick in his historical novel Arthur & George . He makes the index cards disappear. He scoops up what must have undeniably been copious notes and footnotes, shuffles those note cards, deftly blends them, and fans the deck into a colorful moving picture of the sites, sounds, intrigues, and essentials of a true turn-of-the-century London adventure. Sometimes one reads a good book and... (posted by Bill Ectric 5 years 275 days ago.)

Samuel Taylor Coleridge and the Romantic Movement
When I think of Coleridge, I think of those momentary sparks of intuition I have experienced, when my brain seemed to grasp a clear and divine truth. It’s like seeing something from the corner of my eye when I turn to look more closely - it's gone! If others do not share this impression, that is all right, because subjectivity was a major tenet of the Romantic Movement, of... (posted by Bill Ectric 5 years 275 days ago.)

Hunter S. Thompson and Woody Creek, Colorado
Truth hovers somewhere between intellectual enlightenment and glitzy commercialism, between polite give-and-take discourse and exploding old cars for kicks. Real life does not separate into neat compartments like “fiction/nonfiction" or “liberal/conservative." I had always assumed that Gonzo journalist Hunter S. Thompson moved to Woody Creek, Colorado to buffer himself against intrusion by narrow minded... (posted by Bill Ectric 5 years 326 days ago.)
